Books, so full of words. So full of paragraphs. But as a computer author, that’s not all you have to play with. As you try to teach the reader, don’t forget the other tools you have available:
- Tables
- Bullets and numbered lists
- Flow diagrams
- Cartoons
- Photographs
- Screen shots
- Code samples
- Time lines
- Graphs and charts
- URLs and links
- Headings
- Clipart
- Tip boxes
Most of these can get information across far faster and more easily than paragraphs of text. They are tools that help you, and help the reader. When you find something hard to explain or you fear it will be boring to read, ask if you could get it across better using one of these tools.
