Designing games for the 43-year-old woman (via @vtaban)

Excellent presentation. The keys for me:

  1. The 43 year old woman plays games that are put in front of her, not ones she seeks out. (My 30-something year old wife is similar. She will play web games I recommend, but would never search for games to play.)
  2. She plays games for relaxation, not challenge. A game like a glass of wine. Or a soap opera?
  3. This doesn’t mean she’s pathetic. Just that life is challenging enough. If you play challenging games it’s probably because you have no real life challenges.
  4. Expressing herself socially is more important than team play. Social games are social in that they provide a means of social expression.
  5. Manly themes are a turn off but so is too much pink. And so is 3D.

Click through the whole thing. This is the first GDC 11 slide deck I’ve seen on Slideshare. I’ll be posting more as I find them.
