"Before you can do something fun, you have to do something dull"

Make no mistake: readers buy computer books to learn to do cool things. They love authors who get them on the road to cool straight away and keep them travelling it right to the end.

So many authors will say things like, “before we can start builing our amazing web site, we need to consider…” Don’t make your readers wait before they get started! Get them doing things straight away, and follow up with the dull stuff only when it’s absolutely necessary.

It’s much better to say, “now that we’re on our way to having an amazing web site, let’s step back to consider…” Once the reader’s started down the road, they won’t resent a break every so often.
